Archaeologists working near the ancient settlement of Edfu (Edfu is an Egyptian city, located on the west bank of the Nile River between Esna and Aswan) in southern Egypt , have uncovered  a stepped pyramid , dates older than the Great Pyramid of Giza at least a couple of decades to be discovered about 4600 years.

Thestepped pyramid , which was once as high as 43 feet (13 meters) of one of the seven so-called "provincial " Pyramids is the Pharaoh Huni (approx. govern. 2635-2610 BC) or Sneferu (ca. govern built . 2610 -2590 BC ) .

Over time , the stone blocks of the step pyramid were looted , and the monument was exposed to the weather , so today , is about 16 feet ( 5 meters) tall .
Are entire central and southern province Egypt pyramids scattered around large settlements , with no internal chambers and are not intended for burial. Six of the seven pyramids have almost identical dimensions , including the newly discovered at Edfu ( 18.4 x 18.6 m ) is approximately 60 x 61 meters.

Why did they build the pyramids ?

The purpose of these seven pyramids is a mystery. It may have been used as a symbol of the royal cult monuments , which confirms the power of the king in the southern provinces dedicated .

" The similarities of a pyramid , the other are truly amazing , and it is certainly a common plan, a research associate at the University of Chicago Oriental Institute, who led work on the pyramid Edfu . On the east side of the pyramid newly discovered , his team has found the remains of a plant, seem to have been made offerings of food - a finding that is important for the understanding of this type of pyramid , like notes on what they were utilized.

The team also found hieroglyphs carved on the outer faces of the stepped pyramid. The inscriptions are located next to the remains of babies and children , who were buried at the foot of the stepped pyramid. The researchers  think that the inscriptions and burials, long after the pyramid was built and that the structure was not originally intended as a place of burial.

The first results of the excavation were presented at a conference in Toronto recently from the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities .
Its discovered that the pyramid was supported by a thick layer of sand , covered with waste and remains of modern pillage of its blocks .
It did not seem like a pyramid, he said, and people in a nearby village also thought the structure was the tomb of a sheikh , a local Muslim saint .

While the team went to work cleaning the monument of the ancient pyramid was unveiled
It was Built from blocks of sandstone and clay mortar , which was built in the shape of a pyramid with three levels. A core of blocks rises  vertically , with two layers of blocks next to each other . This made look at the Pyramid  , as he had taken three steps .

The style is similar to that ( about grooming . 2670-2640 BC ) built by a stepped pyramid of Djoser, Pharaoh , Egypt's first pyramid built at the beginning of the third dynasty of Egypt . The technique is similar to that used in the Meidum pyramid , which was built by Sneferu and Huni , or began as a step pyramid , before she turned into a true pyramid .

"The building reflects a certain amount of care and a real experience in the mastery of stone construction, especially for the setting of the main blocks ," Marouard said in his document.
Marouard also noted that the pyramid was built directly on the rock and made entirely with local raw materials. The quarry in which you extracted the sandstone was discovered in 2011 and is just over half a mile (800 m) north of the pyramid
