Funerary Mask of Tutankhamun

Hello everybody ,
This Week we are going to share with You one of The masterpieces of one of the most important kings ruled in ancient Egyptian history and this king has many monuments and here one of them so lets start


Material ;

The mask was made out of gold , incarnated with precious and semi-precious stones like ; lapis-lazuli,
Carnelian, quartz, obsidian, turquoise and glass paste, was used in the manufacture of the mask.

Gold was anciently known as nbw or nwb and it was thought that the flesh of the gods is from gold, which mainly came from the mines of Nubia, which is called after the hieroglyphic name of gold .

Lapis-lazuli was mainly used in jewelry and amulets It was known to the Egyptian as hsbd or tfrr .

The hair and the beards of the gods were said to be of lapis lazuli, which came from the mines at Badakshan in Afghanestan .

Carnelian is a semi-precious stone which is a translucent red chalcedony, its color dues to the existence of iron oxide . It was used for beads, amulets, jewelry, furniture and coffins .
It  was also used for inlaid eyes .

Quartz, hieroglyphic bi3t ,,the wonderfull ,, It is a hard crystalline form of sandstone with white, yellow or red coloration.

Obsidian

 a glassy looking material, a natural glass of volcanic origin .Its color is usually black,but sometimes dark brown, dark grey or dark green .

It came from Aden, Armenia, Mediterranean islands . It was used in Iance-heads .

Turquoise ;

mainly come from the quarries of serabit el khadem and el Maghara at Sinai . Hathor was known as the mistress of turquoise . 

Turquoise was anciently known as mfk3t and was used in amulets, beads and jewelry .

Glass was used on a large scale in the 18th Dynasty . Blue glass is colored by a cobalt compound it is a soda-lime silicate .

Function :

Mummy masks were probably a development of the early reserve heads of the 4th Dynasty and it was made to preserve the personal features of the deceased for the soul to identify the mummy .

After the reserve heads of the 4th Dynasty and until the Sixth Dynasty the masks were made of plaster moulded directly on the face , or no top of the mummy,s linen wrappings .

 During the first intermediate period until the 18th dynasty it was made of cartonnage like the mask of Thuya .

At the end of the 18th dynasty it was made of solid gold (our piece here) and that of psussenes I (21st Dynsty , the mask of Amnope ) ( his general )

In the 26th Dynasty to the Greco-Roman period the funerary portraits known as Fayum portraits appeared . They were faces painted on wooden boards , or hollow painted plaster heads .

Description :

This astonishing mask used to cover the head , the shoulders and upper chest of the young king,s mummy .

The youthful features of the king form an idealized portrait of the king . Those features bear resemblance to the facial features that appeared during the reign of Akhenaten with his slightly elongated face, the slightly protruding lips and the almond-shaped eyes . 

The mask represents the king wearing the traditional names headdress , with is strips made of blue glass paste imitating lapis lazuli. The forehead is decorated with the heads of an uraeus and a vulture , representing the goddesses wadjet and Nekhbet , as a symbol of the two lands .

It is known that Wadjet and Nekhbet are the protector deities of upper and Lower Egypt . The Figures were made of gold inlaid with semi-precious stones and colored glass .
The eyes are made of obsidian and quartz with a touch of red at the corners giving them a natural look .

Attached to the chin is a long bent false beard made from gold and glass paste .
The ears are pierced just like the Amarna fashion .


The mask is decorated  with a wide collar of 12 rows known as wsh ending with two clasps in the form of falcon heads , the symbol of Horus. The collar is made of lapis lazuli, quartze and colored glass paste .
